  • Black-Eyed Stella

Those are not rain drops on that daylily, but water from the hose. We do have a chance of rain today and tomorrow, and I sure hope we get it. It's been about three weeks of very hot weather, so we are due.

This bloom is the very first on my Black-Eyed Stella Daylily. It was a long time coming. I bought my first plant nearly a year ago in the fall of 06, but it promptly died when I planted it. I bought another in the early spring of this year, planted it in the same spot, and it finally put up a scape in August. But better late than never. This variety is supposed to have a longer bloom season than the famous Stella deOra, and I planted it out by the sidewalk for that reason.

I'm way behind in my gardening chores -- for two reasons, really. This time of year, because it is usually very hot weather, I can only work outside from sun up until about 9  or 10 AM. (I don't handle the heat nearly as well as some people) Then I got a little further behind when I was too dizzy to work. I'm back to working as long as I did before the dizzies now, but I probably won't really catch up until cooler weather. That's okay... I'll get there.

Speaking of the dizzies, the doctor mentioned some maneuvers called the Brandt-Daroff Exercises designed to fix the problem that I'm having in my inner ear. I found them on the web, and tried to begin the two week regiment yesterday. They made me so dizzy that I threw up. That's that! I won't be doing those again. It took me the rest of the day to feel halfway decent again. The dizzies are getting better on their own gradually, and that I can handle.

  • My, that's a beautiful flower... It's so brilliant and full of colour. It's so cool how you can garden stuff like this! :D

    :sunny:

  • Never seen that one before! She is very pretty! Hopefully I'm sending some rain that way Alice!

  • Okay, thanks for the tip on the lily. I'll look them up. I planted a number of stella de oro this summer and haven't been all that happy with them. Can I dig them up this fall and replant them or do I have to wait until Spring?

  • I did some research and found that this lily is out of Grain Valley, MO not all that far from us. I have a friend who is a member of the Day Lily "club" so am asking her where to go to get these around here. Her day lily gardens are almost always on the national tours etc. when they come to the KC area. Her husband did created several new lilies when he was alive.

  • What a lovely daylily. I wish it would rain here, too. It's been unbelievably HOT! A little rain would be nice to cool things down a bit. Take care and have a great weekend.

  • RYC...Fall is a good time to dig and plant daylilies, but I wouldn't be too hasty to get rid of the Stellas. A daylily clump needs three years to really show what it can do. Stella de Ora daylilies are one of the best, even if they are so common now.

  • RYC: I'm not going to get rid of them ..... just move them all together in one place so that they will have more continuous blooms. When one isn't blooming another will be.

  • Lovely flower!  We have had a few sprinkles of rain tonight, I hope we get more tomorrow too.

Sorry to hear those exercises made you throw up.

  • Beautiful! Vertigo puts me out of business!
